what I'm reading

The Shack

by William P. Young

This is a best seller that has created a lot of buzz and received mixed reviews from the religious community due to theological concerns.  The story centers around one man’s weekend long encounter with God years after the tragic abduction and death of his child in “the shack”, the place where it was believed that she was killed.  From what I glean, most people seem to have an issue with how God is depicted but concede that the story itself is well written.

That's funny, my take was that I mostly loved how God was depicted, but I didn't care for the writer's style, especially at the beginning. I specifically quickly got tired of the similes and metaphors in the first couple of chapters. Seemed like he got better after that. Maybe I just became accustomed to it.

Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who is curious about the God of the Bible, but turned off by the way he is portrayed by the church. I found the God images and the way the man interacted with God to be refreshing.
